Photographer Wesley White was on a kayak from Thatch Caye and halfway through Ragamuffin Caye off the coast of Belize when he stopped to take a break. Then, right out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a tail wagging in a nearby remote island. He scrambled out of the kayak and rushed out.
There he saw a very emaciated puppy. There wasn’t any available food for him and the entire island was just mangrove trees and planks. There was a fishing shack there as well but there weren’t any people. The puppy was basically alone, waiting for help.
He immediately got him on the kayak and they paddled a mile back to Thatch Caye. On their way back, Wesley wasn’t sure of how to approach the situation. He had doubts if people were going to help him and his time was limited as he needed to leave soon. But he also knew that the puppy desperately needed his help.
Once they got back on the mainland, people turned out to be nice and gave the puppy who they named Winston some food. The bartender in his resort got him in touch with the nearest where he left Winston for the night. He kept in touch with his vet, Dr. Mia so that he would be updated as soon as the results of his laboratory exams were out.
Thankfully, all of his lab work was normal but since Winston was not yet ready to travel and Wesley had to go back home, they looked for a foster to take him in while he recovered. Luckily, they found Melanie who took care of Winston for two months, and during that time she would send photos of Winston’s growth and progress.
He gained back weight, he had fur all over his skin, and his ears popped up. After Dr. Mia cleared up Winston, he was ready to travel and reunite with Wesley. So, they worked up the schedule and destination and Winston got on a plane to Dallas. At the same time, Wesley got on his way to Dallas from Montana.
Once they met at the airport it took Winston maybe a minute to smell and recognize Wesley but as soon as he did, his tail just started wagging. The two stayed overnight at a hotel in Dallas before heading back home to Montana. This forever home marked the end of Winston’s journey. From starving surrounded by water to eating and having a foster home in the sand and now playing in the snow healthy and happy.
