Living in a strange new home can be very stressful to some dogs. They are unfamiliar with their new living conditions and may fear the new humans around them. Most of these rescue animals have been homeless their whole lives and are not used to being a pet. This is why there have been many cases of newly-adopted canines that ran away from their new owners.
Because of their fears and confusion, these animals may find themselves in various difficult conditions. It could be a situation that may cost them their lives. This is what could have happened to a pooch named Lucy.
Trapped
Lucy is a Labradoodle that was adopted by a family in Detroit. A few days after arriving in her new home, the pup found a way to escape. Her new owners didn’t notice when she got out.
What they didn’t know t that time was that their dog became the subject of a rescue operation. One that required firefighters to risk their lives to save hers.
Brave responders
A local resident was walking near the Detroit River when he noticed a large dog stuck on a floating ice block. The trembling pooch was about 50 feet from the shore. Afraid that the dog may fall into the icy river, the concerned man called 911 right away.
Responders arrived at the scene a few moments later and assessed the situation. At first, the rescuers considered asking the US Coast Guard for help. The dog was too far out, and it would be dangerous for the firefighters to venture out. But then, they came up with a plan that would be safer for everyone without bringing helicopters in.
One brave responder donned an insulated suit and used a ladder attached to the dock to get closer to the pooch. Half submerged, the firefighter used a catchpole to pull the canine in. It took approximately 30 minutes to reel the dog to the shore successfully.
After a short visit to a vet, Lucy was taken to the local shelter, who then informed her new family that their pet had been found.
