Bella Burton already had Morquio Syndrome from the moment she was born. It’s a rare, life-threatening genetic disorder that affects someone’s growth. The disease makes it difficult for Burton to be mobile. Fortunately, Burton doesn’t need to worry about that anymore. She has George the Great Dane to help her at all times.
Getting help from the gentle giant
Burton already went through nine surgeries. She cannot walk on her own, and she is fully dependent on a wheelchair or crutches. The only time she learned to use her feet was when George entered her life. She leans on him when she needs to move, and he makes sure she doesn’t trip or fall.
With George around, Burton is more active and can live a normal life, just like other kids. She no longer relies on Canadian crutches, regular crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs, because her 131 pound best friend is always there to help her. Burton has also shown so much improvement compared to other therapies she has undergone.
Sick but happy
These days, it’s hard to believe that Burton has a life-threatening disease. She always has a smile on her face whenever she’s playing at the park, shopping, or riding a bike. Burton used to stay indoors with crutches in both hands. Now, she’s free to run outside and go to school with her friends.
American Kennel Club (AKC) took note of the impact that George had on Burton’s life. They gave him the Award for Canine Excellence to acknowledge his efforts in helping bring back the smile on Burton’s face. It’s all in a day’s work for George. He knows what his purpose in Burton’s life is, and he tries to be there for her at all times. Watch their story here:
