If taking care of one dog is already a handful, then imagine dealing with 97! This is admittedly no easy feat, but for Chella Phillips, no task is too big when it comes to saving dog lives.
This woman from the Bahamas has always had a soft spot for stray canines. She runs her very own dog rescue organization, Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas, all on her own. She is very dedicated to giving homeless dogs better lives and medication, even without any government funding.
For the past several years, she made it a habit to go around their neighborhood every week and care for the abandoned animals she encounters. However, just recently, her patience and empathy for the dogs were tested when Hurricane Dorian threatened the islands.
Before the monster storm raged the Bahamas, Chella prepared for an emergency rescue mission to take in the most number of dogs she can. With a wind speed of 119 mph, she just knew that the dogs outside would not survive the massive typhoon at all.
She wasted no time in rescuing the homeless pups around, and by the end of the day, she had a whopping 97 dogs in her house. The ranch home was modest, just enough to accommodate Chella, her brother, and the strays. She managed to fit 79 of the dogs in the master bedroom, while the rest stayed in the living room and the kitchen.
Of course, there were frequent accidents here and there, top it all of with lots of mess and dog poop. But Chella was still happy she got to rescue that many dogs and hoped she could have saved more.
When the storm came, Chella comforted the animals with soothing music and AC. However, on Hurrican Dorian’s second day in the Bahamas, the house flooded and most of her electronics were fried. Thankfully, no harm was done on the dogs.
Chella is still accepting donations in cash or kind for her little refuge. Hopefully, she rescues more dogs in the future. Look at how well-behaved these pooches are in her home.
