A 47-year-old gardener from Warwickshire, England, got the surprise of her life when she dug up a potato that looked like her dog.
She thought it would be just an ordinary harvesting day when Joanne Gudger was getting spuds in her lot. It’s not overstating to say that it was probably the shock of her life when the potato she pulled out was the spitting image of Dave, her 13-year-old American bulldog!
Wanting to document the discovery, the operations manager and mom of three took a photo and sent it to her husband. He did agree that the potato and their pet had an uncanny resemblance indeed. Even her family and friends concurred on the likeness of the two.
The funny discovery brought some relief and happiness to the family, who’s had a rather heavy dealing with Dave’s illness.
Their loyal companion has Cushing’s disease, an incurable hormonal issue among dogs that usually leads to skin infections, enlarged abdomen, and hair loss.
Wanting to put more humor on the situation, Joanne remarked that since Dave is getting older and grey, he is looking more and more like the potato for sure—jowls and all!
The excited gardener/pet owner shared the photo in various groups on Facebook and garnered many reactions. Netizens joked that they, too, would be cautious about digging up in their lots next time in the off chance that they might be pulling out a puppy.
‘Potato Head Dave’, as they fondly called the spud, had a special place by the windowsill in their house. The family says that it wasn’t appropriate to eat such a masterpiece, especially because it looked exactly like their beloved dog.
With it looking exactly like their pet, Joanne and her family decided it wouldn’t be right to eat the potato she’d harvested, instead deciding to give it pride of place and display it on a windowsill.
However, like all things organic, the potato got rotten and composted away, eliminating all resemblances to Dave to mere memory. And what a comical memory it did serve the Gudger’s!
