What do you get when you mix a baby mini cow with 12 dogs? A whole lot of cuteness! And possibly a bit of identity crisis. This is what happened with Moonpie when she was rescued from being sold at an auction. She thinks she is a dog herself.
Janice Wolf is the owner of Rocky Ridge Refuge, an animal sanctuary based in Arkansas. The refuge was a lifelong dream for Janice. She always loved animals and wanted to care for animals with special needs. At any given time, her ranch has around fifty to sixty animals; some are waiting for adoption while others call it their permanent home.
Taking Moonpie in
A lifelong animal lover, Janice couldn’t stand going to animal auctions. She hated looking at the way the animals were treated. So she sent a friend of hers to see if there were animals that needed help. That’s when her friend saw Moonpie. Not many miniature cows are being sold at auctions, so they immediately thought of purchasing her.
When they got Moonpie back to the ranch, they couldn’t put her in with the other rescue cows. She was still too young and needed to be bottle-fed. So they decided to put her in with the dogs. The dogs were living inside Janice’s home. She had no choice but to put Moonpie there as it was cold and rainy outside. All the other enclosed and heated facilities were being utilized.
Luckily, the dogs didn’t mind having Moonpie with them. In fact, they were happy to have the baby calf with them. Especially a deaf white Terrier named Spackle. The senior dog immediately bonded with the calf. All of the dogs would cuddle with her and play with her. They all acted as surrogate mothers to Moonpie. Eventually, Moonpie started acting like the dogs. She would also hold and wait to go outside to pee and poo.
As Moonpie is getting bigger, she stays out more often. She and the dogs play outside, especially when the weather is good. In time, when she becomes more independent, she will be allowed to meet the other farm animals.
