The connection that soldiers have with their dog partners is unbreakable. And with each obstacle that they face, their love and loyalty to each other can be seen. One’s pain is also the pain of the other, as they both experience agony together and both of them tackle difficulties and challenges together.
This is precisely what happened when Sergeant Wes Brown’s K9 German Shepherd companion, Isky, was caught in a huge explosion during one of their important missions in Afghanistan.
The impact of the explosion was definitely so great and severe that it affected the German Shepherd’s knee and it was fractured into six key places. This meant that the dog had to have emergency surgery. Plus, the dog needed to have knee reconstruction, which had to be in Germany. Isky may have survived the explosion and the surgery but it seemed like his life would never be the same again.
After the successful operation, the crime-fighting duo suffered another setback. Using an MRI, the veterinarians revealed that Isky had a nerve tumor. They advised Sergeant Brown that Isky’s leg must be amputated in order for him to survive.
Brown was devastated by the news since he knew that his dog’s life would be drastically affected following the second surgery. Despite this, the sergeant vowed to himself that he would never abandon his cherished dog. Because of this, he began working on the adoption papers immediately and brought Isky home legally.
And finally, after overcoming many obstacles, they were both able to retire and come home to begin a new life. As a fitting acknowledgment of Isky’s gallant service, he received the Hometown Hero award from VFW Post 7728 and became an official member of the American Legion Post. And while all of these honors are extremely remarkable, Isky is already content and reassured that he would spend eternity with his beloved fur dad.
