Many amazing dogs spend a long time in shelters waiting for the perfect family to adopt them. These dogs are in no way bad. They are just caught in terrible circumstances and need humans who can understand them and what they require.
In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a nonprofit rescue organization called Dogs Forever have its own long-]staying shelter resident. He is a gentle pooch named Leo that was taken from a city-run shelter because he was in real danger of being put to sleep.
The rescue group believes that he deserves a second chance. They haven’t lost hope that he will find a family. Despite being in their facility for over 900 days already.
Difficult at times
Dogs Forever did everything that they could to get attention to Leo. They frequently posted photos and videos of the playful pooch on their social media accounts and even asked their followers to share their posts.
The shelter staff admits that Leo can be difficult at times. He is very energetic and requires frequent physical activities. The dog also has problems with other animals. He can get rough, and this eliminates homes with young children.
With all the requirements needed to adopt Leo, most adopters tend to shy away from the dog. His long stay in the shelter further compounds the problem. He is cooped up and needs humans who will regularly tend to his needs.
The right person
Leo’s new life began when an Iowa native named David Evens started looking for a companion. The middle-aged man had just broken up with his long-time girlfriend and was very lonely. He came across the unwanted dog’s photo and fell in love with him.
David went to the shelter, and he was informed of the many requirements that came along with adopting the pooch. This included going through a one-month training with the dog. David didn’t mind, and he even extended the training to three months. After that, the two were inseparable.
After waiting for the right person for the longest time, Leo is finally home.
