During the night before Thanksgiving, a man from California let his best friend, a pit bull named “Buddy,” outside to play in his backyard. A few moments later, that same man would risk his own life to save his dog from the clutches of a ravaging, massive 350-pound American black bear.
Kaleb Bentham let his dog, Buddy, outside to play in his backyard in Green Valley, California. All was well for the two when suddenly Kaleb heard a strange noise outside. He then decided to go out to investigate the noise. And do you want to know what Kaleb saw? Well, what he saw was his scared pit bull face-to-face against a 350-pound American black bear.
Kaleb heard a growl about 75-100 feet down, and to his surprise, he saw a bear dragging his dog by his head in his mouth.
Even though he was horrified at what he saw right now, he was willing to do anything for the dog he rescued many years ago, no matter the cost. Knowing what he must do, he decided to act and go mano-a-mano against the bear. Confronting a bear was something that a mere human wouldn’t do, but Kaleb was willing to do anything for his best friend.
To rescue Buddy, Kaleb didn’t take any chances. He ran towards the bear, plowed into it, tackled it, and grabbed its throat. He repeatedly hit the bear on the face and the eye until it released his dog.
Thanks to Kaleb’s stringent actions, the bear decided to release Buddy and retreat into the woods, seeking revenge against Kaleb for beating him up. Though, both Kaleb and Buddy weren’t out of the woods just yet, as Buddy’s wounds needed to be treated. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the nearest veterinary hospital was closed. Fortunately for the two, Mother Lode Veterinary Hospital in Grass Valley, California, was open and was willing to help out Kaleb and his best friend.
It took the vets three and a half hours to stitch up his pitbull’s fatal wounds. Miraculously, Buddy survived and is walking down the long road to recovery.
On the other hand, the bear is still loose and has returned to the area several times. Kaleb was willing to do anything to keep Buddy safe, even if it’s through violent means. He treats his dog as his child, and he is ready to die for him.
What a loving and kind gesture!
