Terri, one of the chief rescuers for the Los Angeles-based charity animal rescue organization Foxy and the Hounds, acted immediately when she learned that a pregnant dog recently gave birth and it needed her help. She was thrilled to meet the animal family and be a part of their adventure.
When they reached eight weeks old, the puppies were adopted by their new families. Even Mary, the mother dog, found a new home. A year and a half later, however, Terri received a phone call from a different shelter informing her that Mary had been found on the streets.
Terri was speechless. She wanted to know exactly what happened, so she went to the shelter immediately. And upon seeing the dog, she was appalled.
Mary had scars on her nose and on her ears from insect bites. She had also nibbled on her tail. She changed drastically when she sniffed Terri and recognized her rescuer’s scent. She became so joyful and extraordinarily energetic.
Mary spent around one week in the hospital, followed by a few weeks in a temporary foster home. Doug and Michelle, a married couple, eventually offered to foster her. Mary took an instant liking to them, but Doug was hesitant to develop feelings for her.
Doug kept assuring himself that Mary would not be their third foster fail. However, despite all his best efforts, It was impossible for him not to fall in love with her. Although he never admitted it, his wife was aware that he wanted to keep the dog.
Michelle anticipated that her husband would be happy upon learning that Mary would be staying with them permanently. Therefore, she planned a surprise and gave Doug the nicest Christmas gift. Inside the package were Mary’s new tag with their address and the adoption papers listing their names as the dog’s new owners.
Doug wept uncontrollably. He could not believe Michelle would give him permission to keep the dog, but she did.
